When is Laxmi Puja in 2026?
Laxmi Puja (Diwali Pooja) is on Sunday, 8 November 2026, on the night of Kartik Amavasya. Dhanteras falls two days earlier, on Friday, 6 November 2026.
Since the 8th is a Sunday, many families get the full day for ghar ki safai, rangoli and decoration. That’s a nice bonus.
What is the Laxmi Puja shubh muhurat in your city?
Laxmi Puja is performed during Pradosh Kaal, the window after sunset. The most auspicious time is when Vrishabha Lagna (a sthir lagna) is rising. Elders say a pooja done in a sthir lagna brings Laxmi ji’s lasting presence in the home.

A Diwali shaam we all remember
It’s a few minutes before sunset. The floor is still a little damp, the rangoli at the door has one wonky petal nobody wants to fix, and someone is asking, “Matchbox kahan hai?” The youngest has been told for the fifth time not to touch the diyas yet.
Then the first diya is lit. The ghee catches, the flame settles, and the whole house goes quiet in a way only Diwali evening can. Someone lights the agarbatti, the smoke drifts past the mandir, and suddenly the house smells like every Diwali of your childhood.
That smell isn’t just fragrance. It’s a memory. That’s what we mean by Sugandh Jo Har Ghar Mehkaye.
(And the matchbox? It’s always in the first kitchen drawer you checked. 😄)
How is Diwali celebrated across India?
The day is the same everywhere, but every region adds its own flavour.
- North India: Ganesh-Laxmi pooja at home, aarti, diyas and mithai.
- Gujarat and Maharashtra: Traders and business families do Chopda Pujan, starting new bahi-khata under Laxmi ji’s blessings.
- South India: Deepavali starts with an early-morning oil bath, then new clothes, diyas and sweets.
- Bengal: Kali Puja is performed on Diwali night.
Different rituals, same wish: light, prosperity and family together.

How to do Laxmi Puja at home? (Simple pooja vidhi)
Every family has its own parampara, so treat this as a simple, widely followed vidhi.
- Clean and decorate. Clean the house, especially the mandir and the main door. Make a rangoli and place diyas at the entrance.
- Set up the chowki. Spread the cloth on a raised platform. Place Laxmi ji on the right of Ganesh ji, with the kalash alongside.
- Snan and sankalp. Take a bath, wear fresh clothes and sit facing east or north. Take a sankalp to perform the pooja with devotion.
- Ganesh pooja first. Offer phool, akshat and a diya, and pray for a smooth pooja.
- Invite Laxmi ji. Offer jal, kumkum, haldi, phool and mala. Light a ghee diya and agarbatti.
- Offer bhog and sikke. Place fruits, mithai and lai before the Devi, along with coins (and bahi-khata where it’s your family’s custom).
- Mantra and aarti. Chant Laxmi mantras or the Laxmi Chalisa, then do the aarti with a diya and kapoor.
- Distribute prasad. Share it with the family, then light diyas at the door, balcony and windows.
